Chat Recap 3/31/2011

Tonight we had a great discussion!

Question 1: How many servings of fruits and vegetables do you eat in a typical day?

For me this one has evolved over time. I began the program only having 1-3 servings in a day. Now I am up to 8 or 9 and some days it can go to 10. I find myself snacking on fruits and veggies before other things and this is a good habit for me.

Question 2: What is your favorite whole grain to eat and how do you cook it?

For me this was simple I love my oatmeal in the morning with frozen fruit. It fills me up and leaves me satisfied for hours.

Question 3: What brought you to weight watchers? Is this your first time? if not what is different this time?

This is my first time doing weight watchers. I have been on the program for 13 months and lost 99 pounds. I went to weight watchers because I was tired of taking 7 medications every day and feeling like a 60 year old.

Question 4: What is something you can do that scares you?

For me it is racing! I was so scared to try running and then scared to run with other people in a race. I still get nervous before every race but it is worth it! I love it!!

Stuffed Peppers

I am Italian. It is no secret that Italian food is notoriously high in carbs and greasy goodness LOL so when I became diagnosed with Celiac Disease it was a tough one to swallow. How do you tell an Italian she cannot have pasta and bread anymore? Then I started Weight Watchers and learned the value of a point. I made a decision that I would still cook and enjoy the foods I loved just with some slight variations. It has worked thus far and I usually am able to come up with some pretty tasty alternatives.

I make these when I am hosting a dinner party, or going somewhere. I find them simple and easy. I can make them a day or 2 ahead of time and they serve up nicely along side a fresh salad.

First you start with green peppers. I like to cut them and clean them out. I use the tops for salads that week. I steam the peppers for about 10 minutes in a pot just to make them nice and soft when eating them.

While that is going on I have the ground turkey in the pan cooking. I just saute it with half of a chopped onion, garlic powder, and Italian seasoning. I let it simmer until it is completely cooked. By using the 99% fat free extra lean ground turkey it really saves me some points and still satisfies my appetite.

While that is all going on I make a quick sauce. I chop the other half of the onion fine and saute it in a sauce pan with 2 teaspoons of olive oil. If I have minced garlic I add a little bit. When it is cooked I add in the stewed tomatoes and sauce. I buy the canned ones that are salt free. Then I add some water depending on how thick you want it. Let it simmer for about a half hour and its ready to go.

Cook the brown rice. When everything is cooked you combine the turkey, brown rice, veggie grated topping, and sauce. You want enough sauce to hold the mixture together and have a nice mixed mash to stuff your peppers with.

Then you simple spoon the mixture into each pepper. I place them in a pam sprayed pan coated with some of the sauce and top them with some sauce. I bake them for about 45 minutes to an hour depending on softness of the peppers.

That is all. It is pretty simple and like I said a great dish to serve to guests. Or you can wrap them and freeze them. I have a few in the freezer separated out for a quick lunch. I do not do frozen dinners lol well my own way I guess I do hehe.

Ingredient List:

9 medium green peppers

20 oz package of 99% fat free extra lean ground turkey

2 cups cooked brown rice (1 cup uncooked)

2 cups salt free canned stewed tomatoes

2 cups salt free tomato sauce

1 medium onion

2 tsp olive oil

2 tsp garlic powder

2 tbsp grated veggie topping

This recipe makes 9 servings and is 5 Points Plus per serving!

Thursday March 24

Tonight’s talk was awesome! This weekend’s meeting was about Hindsight and What You Can Learn from a Yo-Yo: 5 ways to et back on track! SUCHHHH a great topic and exactly what i needed tonight =)

Q1: What fad diets did u try befoire starting weight watchers?

– I did LA weight loss– but didn’t like i couldn’t eat some foods; i thought about South beach– but i said heck no to no carbs!  I tried Ideal Protein this which (which isn’t a fad diet at alllll!) But still struggled with following the plan to a T! I’ve done Weight Watchers several times, but i’m determined to make it a lifestyle change this time!  I need something that will fit with my life, and help me to change my life and the way i think about food and eating, and Weight Watchers is that program!

Q2: What are some ww friendly items from ur grocery list?

– bananas, grapes, clementines, strawberries, blueberries, zucchini, asparagus, tomatoes, green beans,  definitely! @Chobani definitely :) hummus, almonds, wheat thins, skinny cow treats!

Q3: How many ounces of water do you drink daily? What else do you drink during the day?

– I try to drink at least 64 oz of water, 1 can of sprite in the morning i need my caffeine! (but apparently there’s no caffeine in sprite!!!)  Maybe lemonade or camomile tea!

Q4: How do you feel when you’ve had a set-back and what do you do about it?!

– I remind myself that there’s no day but today, and i can so do this! Just have to pick my head up and keep trying! I remind myself that this lifestyle change and journey is a marathon, not a spring!!! Like my leader said tonight, with weight watchers there’s no failure, only feedback!!!

Many people ask, “Why Weight Watchers?” Valid question in a world with Jenny Craig, South Beach, Atkins, etc. So really why?

For me, it’s simple…It works.

I’ve probably tried every diet imaginable.

  • Grapefruit was fantastic, topped it with lots of brown sugar.  I binged on cookies after three days because I was hungry.
  • Atkins was okay but I missed burger buns and pancakes.  When I added them, I added the weight too.
  • South Beach would be perfect if I lived in South Beach, FL with access to fruits and veggies galore.

Sadly I tried limiting my calories to less than 800 a day or taking diet pills or laxatives while binging.  Don’t do this, it did more harm than you’d believe.

After spending my teen years and early 20’s I was fat, tired and worn out.

At a physical with my doctor I finally saw how unhealthy I was.  Trouble breathing,  tight clothes and it was getting worse.  He suggested a food journal and exercising.  For 8 months I counted calories and walked everywhere.  I lost over 80 pounds and was proud of myself.

Then I stalled.  I couldn’t carry my calorie count book and journal everywhere and my new schedule made workouts difficult.  I needed a change to get back on track to the healthiest me.  Several friends were joining Weight Watchers together and invited me.

The change from calorie counting to the Weight Watchers Momentum Program was just what I needed.  I could eat anything I desired but Weight Watchers helped my figuring in the fat and fiber along with the calories.

Healthier food choices and earning activity points helped me reach my goal weight.  I had a fantastic shopping spree to celebrate.

Meeting support has been invaluable.  It got me over the humps and plateaus.  Weight losses were celebrated as were other victories like smaller pants or running longer distances.  Knowing that I was among friends kept me coming back week after week.

Currently I’m not where I’d love to be.  Over the last 6 months I’ve gained weight with health problems.  Yet I continue with Weight Watchers because I know it works.

I’m a vegetarian who is gluten free with many other allergies.  Using the easy Points Plus formula I can calculate the points I’m eating and make the best choices for my weight loss and my health.

Veggie bake on broccoli instead of pasta.

Tracking all my foods, gluten free or not gives me the picture of my day.  The recipe builder helps convert old family recipes and new cookbook finds into the best meals for my health and weight loss.

As my medical conditions stabilize I know I can and will get back to my goal weight without feeling restricted.  Instead of restricting like my past diets, I’m free to choose what I want and when I want it.  And I know that my weekly meetings, the message boards, and the Weight Watchers Chat will be there to support me.

Why do you choose Weight Watchers?

Wwchat March 17th 2011

We had an awesome chat tonight hosted by Chobani! They gave away a sample case to one of our lucky chatters and the winner was @mcschoon!!! So congrats!!!

Our questions were:

Question 1 What is your favorite flavor of Chobani?

My favorite is a tie bewteen Lemon and Pineapple. I love the lemon and it really makes me feel like I am indulging in a dessert. The pineapple is creamy and really satisfies my sweet tooth.

Question 2 How do you divide up your daily points to make room for treats?

I eat 5-6 mini meals and snacks throughout the day to help me stay satisfied and fueled. I start every day with some oatmeal and fruit and mid day in between lunch and breakfast I have a chobani and piece of fruit. My meals are usually between 5 and 6 points and this leaves me room for snacks. I focus on eating lean protein and fruits and vegetables throughout the day. Also we discussed the importance of drinking water and how it helps us stay on track.

Question 3 What do you indulge in?

Since joining weight watchers and learning about food and the effect on my body that it has I really have changed my indulgences. When I first began I would indulge in a weight watchers ice cream every night, or sugar free pudding etc. Then slowly I started cutting that back to every other night, then once a week, and now maybe twice a month. basically I realized that I did not need those things all the time. I like using my points for fuel for my workouts. So I fill up on fruits and veggies and lean protein. And my favorite go to treat is a protein smoothie using frozen fruit.

Question 4 If you could travel anywhere and eat anything what would it be?

For me I said India I would love to travel and have some spicy curry flavored dishes. I would love to travel outside of the country period since I have never been anywhere outside of the US!

Did you enjoy chat tonight?

January 20, 2011 chat

Have you experienced a #wwchat yet? If you follow Weight Watchers, or even considering it, you
definitely need to come by and check it out! We chat on twitter using the hash tag #wwchat every
Thursday from 8-9pm ET.
Tonight on wwchat we discussed:
  • Fruits and Veggies:
What new fruits and veggies have you tried since the roll out of Points Plus?
A lot of people have been encouraged to try new fruits and vegetables and this is great! The benefit
of points plus is they are zero points of course! You should aim to try one new fruit and veggie every
month, by keeping your diet changing you keep things interesting. This is a key to success.
  • Weight watchers style:
What kind of weight watchers member are you? Super strict, extra laidback, or in the middle?
Many people border along strict and middle. It is important to find a halthy balance, you cannot be
maintaining and weighing and measuring constantly it may hinder your success. The ultimate goal of
Weight Watchers is to teach you how to live a healthy lifestyle and not focus on being on a “diet”.
  • Fitness Style
What is your favorite piece of fitness equipment or workout to do to earn some activity points?
Many people discussed how they are training to run. There are several of our members doing races
coming up soon so stay tuned for their big recaps! Also some members like to do workout videos at
home, like the 30 day shred and Leslie sansone’s walk at home.
  • Treats
We wanted to know what treat you cannot live without and how do you fit it into your daily points.
Many of us were chocolate fans! Some people buy an extra dark bar and fit it in using their weeklies. An
important part of the program is fitting in things you love, this will help keep you successful in the long
run. Mel shared a quote with us she got from a WW leader “Don’t give up anything during your journey
that you are not prepared to give up after you reach your goal” I love this!
